Job Description:

Department: Data

The Data Insights area transforms raw data into comprehensive and meaningful insights that drive informed decision-making. The Data Insights team engages with business stakeholders to understand their needs and translate these into technical requirements, ensuring effective collaboration and efficient data management.

Position purpose

The Head of Data Insights will be responsible for overseeing the Data Insights team. This role involves leading a team of data engineers and data visualisation specialists to provide strategic insights, develop data pipelines and dashboards, and support decision-making processes across the company.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong analytical mindset, excellent leadership skills, and a deep understanding of data insights and business intelligence and how this can drive commercial value. Additionally, the role involves establishing and overseeing compliance with security processes, setting priorities for key use cases, defining resources requirements, ensuring overall quality of processes, and guiding the production of the data insights team output including dashboards and reports in alignment with company guidelines and best practices.

A key part of this role is promoting the work of the Data Insights team, identifying opportunities for the Data team to enhance commercial value, ensuring we develop solutions at the highest standards to guarantee user and senior management satisfaction, and maximising the utilisation of insights and tools produced by the team.

Main responsibilities

  • User-Centric and Strategic Approach: Develop close relationships with senior stakeholders to proactively understand their strategic objectives, ensuring projects are aligned with their objectives. Identify key business questions and needs to formulate data insights use cases that deliver high commercial value and impact to the front office, and use cases for senior management that drive strategic decision-making and business growth.
  • Roadmap Oversight: Responsible for Data Insights team roadmap, navigating the delivery of multiple complex use cases while managing to headcount and budget constraints. Monitor progress and ensure commitments to users and the Prioritisation Board are met.
  • Prioritisation Board: Play a lead role in the prioritisation board (this will include organising and facilitating the meetings), driving content, proposing priorities and playing back recent work and value created. Responsible for stakeholder management post board meetings including co-decision making with Head of Trading and Head of Data.
  • Resource Management: Determine the strategic use of resources within the Data Insights team. Ensure that the team has the necessary tools, training, and support.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Effectively communicate insights to stakeholders, fostering a data-driven decision-making environment. Facilitate collaboration between different departments across EDFT.
  • Compliance and Quality Oversight: Establish and oversee compliance with security processes, onboarding processes, production processes etc and ensure alignment with company guidelines and best practices
  • Data Engineering Responsibilities: Design ETL solutions, develop dashboards, and serve as subject matter experts in specific data domains.

Experience and technical requirements

  • Experience at rapidly gaining a deep understanding of a complex data set and proposing opportunities for insight to deliver commercial value.
  • Significant experience working with data visualisations, and proficiency in Tableau and/or Power BI. Experienced at defining technical solutions in partnership with the Enterprise Architect.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to communicate findings and proposals to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proficiency on ETL processes and data modelling, as well as the main tools used in the market (SQL, Alteryx and Python).
  • Interest in energy trading and willingness to work across the business on understanding the needs of different departments/teams
  • Experience overseeing and managing timeframes for a complex portfolio of use cases.
  • Experience using one or more programming languages such as Python or C#.
  • A thirst for the latest technologies and automation coupled with a curiosity to research and innovate on new approaches.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills to guide and develop junior team members.
  • Effective problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities to tackle data-related challenges.
  • Self-aware as to the value of current work vs. overall goal.
  • Comfortable to work under pressure with demanding front office users.

Hours of work:

40 hours per week - Monday to Friday - Hybrid
